During my career, I’ve been very fortunate to work with many fantastic graduates, and during recent conversations, it became clear that there was a demand for an introductory course to money and finance.

Personally, I’m amazed that our education system (at least in the UK) does not teach the basics and I hope that over the next several weeks, we can work together through a seven-step plan to help you get control of your finances and not the other way round.

Former US President, Benjamin Franklin once said “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest”, and he was absolutely right, because the financial markets are designed to extract the maximum value from each transaction and if we’re to be on the right side of the trade, we should prepare to roll up our sleeves, learn and act.

One useful thing I remember from childhood is that we have a natural curiosity and are not afraid to ask lots of questions especially if the subject is as significant as choosing the right mortgage product.

I firmly believe that we should “Do what we love and love what we do” and even though this is difficult when you are first starting out, you can develop a positive mental attitude to bring this about. As a graduate, you will typically have several rotations and will be able to work in many areas of the business, often finding something that may be different to your degree subject matter but which feels better aligned to you.

If you follow the course through and act on each step in order, then you will feel more confident of where every pound is going and what it’s doing for both you and your future.
